Greedy ex-cop jugged for pushing rich wife off a cliff
2010-09-03
True Romance, Australian style.

A nation full of single middle-aged women, unwanted by middle-aged men who are looking only at those under 30.

Former police detective Desmond Campbell has been jailed for at least 24 years for pushing his new bride over a cliff in the Royal National Park south of Sydney.

Sentencing Campbell today, Justice Megan Latham said his wife of six months, Janet, had "died in a strange place far from her family, her friends, and her community."

She handed the 52-year-old a non-parole period of 24 years, saying he had shown no remorse or contrition that could have counted in his favour in consideration of the length of the sentence.
What Des Campbell did:
Married a woman (though he said she was an ugly pig behind her back) and took her camping five metres from a cliff edge
And to a former girlfriend he dumped after he got a $60,000 sports car out of her...
Conman costs Englishwoman thousands
Ahh the path of true love never does run smooth, especially in my country, Australia, where men don't really like women. They like their money and they like their mates. Yes, this guy is extreme but try getting a 50-year-old man for a date if you are a good looking, slim, fit 48 or 50-year-old woman in Australia. They can't wait to go to the US, UK, Canada...anywhere but here.

#6  I love american men. and best of all, they love australian women.

They should all come over here immediately because let me tell you there is a market over here. A great demand for men that are not Australian. not that we dont want our own blokes we do, but they don't want us!!

#4  ps: where did trailing wife's comment go? I think my computer must have ghosts.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, anon1. It's not you. I'm taking a cold medicine that's making me a bit spacy, and clearly affecting my judgement. I hit submit when I meant preview, looked at the result, and decided it was rude and heartless, which you didn't deserve. So I disappeared it, taking unfair advantage of my ability to do that. I shan't make that misjudgement again. To everyone, I apologize.

The sense of that comment was,
Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander. That which is from far away is exotic and desirable, which is why Australian women are looked upon favourably on the other side of the globe. But American husbands might insist on bringing their guns with them...

It was probably somewhat less incoherent earlier. Dear anon1, when you come, you'll have to beat them off with a stick, you'll be that popular. Again, my apologies.

#2  this is a horrible crime but a great great story.

Warning signs the murdered lady missed:

1) That her husband's ex-wife was suing him for recovery of money he took from her
2) That the husband's ex-wife tried to warn her
3) That her family didn't like him
4) That he didn't introduce her to his family
5) That he treated her cruelly sometimes such as calling her "ugly pig" behind her back (though she might not have known this)
6) That he was cheating multiple times (though she might not have known she probably suspected)
7) That her husband was in debt
8) That her husband asked her for money and she gave it to him!

all of these reasons.... alarm bells

But the alarm bells didn't go off.

And I know why

Because when you are lonely and 48 and haven't had a partner in nearly a decade, and when you think that nobody will ever love you again - and then along comes a man who says he wants to marry you, it seems like all your dreams have come true. Like there is a God after all.

And you are so so happy to get your heart's desire, against all the odds, that you close your eyes to the warning signs. I really understand that woman and why she fell prey to that man.

And I also understand that man.

He didn't care because he is a sociopath. He lacks empathy and has been that way since birth. He doesn't feel anything and sees the women as dollar signs to be manipulated. Less than human - obstacles in his way. He sees the vulnerable older ones, tells them what they want to hear, take their money and dump them. This time he went too far and killed one.

ps: where did trailing wife's comment go? I think my computer must have ghosts.
