UN 'ill-equipped' to solve world issues |
2010-09-03 |
![]() I think it was Robert Heinlein who described a committee as the only creature with 18 stomaches and no brain... He voiced concerns over the current UN system, which gives a veto power to a small number of countries -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States. "Six decades after its establishment, the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society and its system-related agencies and programs are perpetually in crisis," said Weiss, who is the presidential professor of political science at the City University of New York Graduate Center. He further stressed that no UN institution should be based on the past. "While World War I and II gave rise to the groundbreaking efforts at organizations in 1919 and 1945, the UN today seems ill-equipped to deal with modern challenges to world order." |

#14 The UN does a lot of good, its just the lower level non foreign policy type stuff. When they get involved in peacekeeping, human rights or trying to stop an aggressor they do more harm than good. I've long thought that US policy should be to promote Japan and India (and perhaps Brazil, Australia and South Africa) as Security Council Members under the premise that it dilutes any votes and forces China (and France and others who prize membership) to come out against these nations getting the vote to preserve their current level of power. Yeah, and the revolving seat should be dumped as a stupid idea. |

#10 "Just "Promote" them into oblivion" I'm leaning more toward the firing squads, RJ - cheaper, and more efficient. |

#9 Has the UN done anything notable other than throw parties and provide a home for elitists from other countries. Ummm, yes, they provide a place to "Promote" our piss-poor, but powerful politicians, thus getting rid of the "Problem" without needing to resort to either Firing squads or assassins. Just "Promote" them into oblivion. |

#8 I believe the UN defines "progress" similar to how Obama might describe "progress". |

#7 "Get the U.S out of the U.N." seems like a good campaign slogan to me. |

#6 The UN is ill equipped to do anything that isn't vile. And even then not so much. US out of UN! |

#5 Some of the same things are wrong with the UN that are wrong with our present Congress. Has the UN done anything notable other than throw parties and provide a home for elitists from other countries. Our sovereignty and our welfare just don't with the UN's aims if you anyone articulate their aims. The UN is a big suck on our economy. Time to think about dumping support. |

#1 What's Wrong with the United Nations (and How to Fix It)? Somethings can't be fixed and have to be humanely put down. |
