Pakistan: A role model for a progressive Muslim state
2010-08-15
[Arab News] Around 175 million Pakistanis celebrate their country's independence day with thankfulness to Almighty Allah for giving them this homeland after immense sacrifices.
Or not, since they've cancelled the celebrations in light of the fact that a third of the country's underwater...
The emergence of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, now the sixth most populous nation in the world, was a tremendous achievement of the Muslims of British-ruled India. It was made possible by the dedicated leadership of the head of the Muslim League, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

The Muslims wanted a country in which they could live their lives in accordance with their religious and cultural traditions and prosper economically which otherwise would not have been possible under the majority Hindu community when the British left.

#2  -- Ambassador Tariq Osman Hyder is a retired Pakistani diplomat.

Dear Ambassador Hyder, ret'd, has given a nice summary of Pakistan's consistent and enthusiastic support of jihadi terror movements as a founding principle of the nation. If that's what a progressive Muslim state is, let's not have any more.

#1  Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah wanted a secular state where moslems and hindus could each practise their religion. He died in 1948. By 1956 Pakistan had declared itself an Islamic Republic. The elder Bhutto introduced 'Islamic Socialism' and for all practical purposes institutionalized extortion from businesses. Since then private industry has been a step child and both non moslems and Shia moslems have been persecuted more and more.

yes, I suppose this is a role model of sorts
