LHC overturns Javed Hashmi's treason sentence |
2010-06-23 |
[Dawn] The Rawalpindi bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday overturned the conviction against PML-N leader Javed Hashmi in a treason case. Hashmi had filed a plea in the court regarding the overturning of the conviction. He was acquitted as no concrete evidence was available to suggest his involvement in any act of treason, Justice Waqar Hasan Mir said. The case against Hashmi was registered in 2003 after he made a speech against former president Pervez Musharraf in the parliament. Hashmi was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in 2004 but was released on bail in 2007, after serving three years and nine months in prison. |
