Previous efforts to build more economical launch systems have foundered largely because they attempted a massive reduction in a single step, with claimed reductions of 90% being typical. This was one problem with the Shuttle, originally billed as a mostly re-usable and far more economical system, it turned out to be just the opposite. By setting their goals realistically, SpaceX has actually achieved a very significant reduction, around 60%, in a practical system. |
