The real genius of Elon Musk is that he and his team didnÂ’t go for too much too fast in the way of reducing costs. Previous efforts to build more economical launch systems have foundered largely because they attempted a massive reduction in a single step, with claimed reductions of 90% being typical. This was one problem with the Shuttle, originally billed as a mostly re-usable and far more economical system, it turned out to be just the opposite.

By setting their goals realistically, SpaceX has actually achieved a very significant reduction, around 60%, in a practical system.

#2  SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk sounds a little Moonrakish, doesn't it?

Interesting comments from some of the "space newbies", particularly with respect to the possibility of early private launch vehicles blowing up.
