Somalia: Islamists vacate central town |
2010-05-31 |
Hizbul Islam fighters have reportedly vacated from Baladweyne after allied government soldiers and Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a advanced to the town, witnesses said on Monday. Hizbul Islam rebels have been controlling Baladwyne, the regional capital of Hiiraan region in central Somalia, recently. Residents said fierce fighting between the two sides erupted outside the town and Hizbul Islam fighters withdrew from the town. So far, no casualties have been reported since it is too early to know. The bridge which divides the east and the west of the town collapsed recently which makes difficult for Hizbul Islam rebels to retreat back if they are overpowered in the fighting. |
