| Report: At least 10 activists killed as Israel Navy opens fire on Gaza aid flotilla |

| Gaza aid Freedom flotilla Israel Navy troops opened fire on pro-Palestinian activists aboard a six-ship aid flotilla sailing for the Gaza Strip, killing at least 10 and wounding several others after the convoy ignored orders to turn back, Turkey's NTV reported early Monday. NTV said between 10 and 15 people were killed, with over 6o wounded. This is what was supposed to happen, of course. Life is cheap in the wonderful world of Islam. It's expended to make points, or even just for amusement. Earlier Monday, Al Jazeera reported that the Gaza aid flotilla had changed course to avoid a confrontation with Israeli warships. The Israeli naval vessels reportedly made contact earlier with the six-ship flotilla, which is carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid and supplies to Gaza. The Israeli navy was operating under the assumption that the activists manning the boats would not heed their calls to turn around, and Israeli troops were prepared to board the ships and steer them away from the Gaza shores and toward the Israeli port city of Ashdod. Huwaida Arraf, one of the flotilla organizers, said the six-ship flotilla began the journey from international waters off the coast of Cyprus Sunday afternoon after two days of delays. According to organizers, the flotilla was expected to reach Gaza, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) away, on Monday afternoon, and two more ships would follow in a second wave. The flotilla was fully prepared for the different scenarios that might arise, and organizers were hopeful that Israeli authorities would do what's right and not stop the convoy, one of the organizers said. "We fully intend to go to Gaza regardless of any intimidation or threats of violence against us," Arraf said. "They are going to have to forcefully stop us." After nightfall, three Israeli navy missile boats left their base in Haifa, steaming out to sea to confront the activists' ships. Two hours later, Israel Radio broadcast a recording of one of the missile boats warning the flotilla not to approach Gaza. "If you ignore this order and enter the blockaded area, the Israeli navy will be forced to take all the necessary measures in order to enforce this blockade," the radio message continued. The flotilla, which includes three cargo ships and three passenger ships, is trying to draw attention to Israel's three-year blockade of the Gaza Strip. The boats are carrying items that Israel bars from reaching Gaza, like cement and other building materials. The activists said they also were carrying hundreds of electric-powered wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said that after a security check, permitted humanitarian aid confiscated from the boats will be transferred to Gaza through authorized channels. However, Israel would not transfer items it has banned from Gaza under its blockade rules. Palmor said that for example, cement would be allowed only if it is tied to a specific project. This is the ninth time that the Free Gaza movement has tried to ship in humanitarian aid to Gaza since August 2008. Israel has let ships through five times, but has blocked them from entering Gaza waters since a three-week military offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers in January 2009. The flotilla bound for Gaza is the largest to date. Some 700 pro-Palestinian activists are on the boats, including 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, European legislators and an elderly Holocaust survivor. The mission has experienced repeated delays, both due to mechanical problems and a decision by Cyprus to bar any boat from sailing from its shore to Gaza. The ban forced a group of European lawmakers to depart from the breakaway Turkish Cypriot northern part of the island late Saturday. Israeli military officials said they hope to resolve the situation peacefully but are prepared for all scenarios. Naval commandos have been training for days in anticipation of the standoff. Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity under official guidelines, said the forces would likely take over the boats under the cover of darkness. Palmor said foreigners on the ships would be sent back to their countries. Activists who did not willingly agree to be deported would be detained. A special detention facility has been set up in Ashdod. |

| #70 Although rules differ somewhat (and are more or less unwritten rules) international law favors the Israeli position: 1) Neutral vessels can be subject to capture, if they run a blockade. Check 2) The blockade has to be effective to be cognizable in a prize court, that is, not merely declared but actually enforced. Check 3 Neutrals (we are giving them the benefit of the doubt here) have to be warned of it. Check 4) If so then any ships running the blockade of whatever flag are subject to capture and condemnation. But of course, all this isn't even necessary. Israel had the right to inspect the cargo. They were denied boarding violently. The Israeli Navy acted in self defense after that. Case closed. That they botched the action is another thing. But show me a place in the world where you can attack troops with knives and iron bars and you are NOT shot. |

| #38 The Israelis were smart enough to have a (hopefully friendly) Rooters reporter with them, close enough to observe the action through night vision. However, I have to criticize the Israelis for having a crappy strategy, with a crappy execution. The laundry list of what they should have done: Individually rappelling commandos must be covered by serious weaponry. They were not. In addition, some of their commandos *primary* "weapons" were frigging paintball guns. They should not have landed on a moving ship. It is not hard AT ALL to disable a ship without serious damage. Either take out the propeller, or put a large caliber bullet or three through the hull and into the engine. Don't even bother with the element of surprise. In fact, those ships should have sat dead in the water for several hours, while the Israelis then used megaphone communications to babble at them from a safe distance. While they were smart enough to electronically jam the ships, they waited too long to do so, so they were able to get out some commo before being turned off. A long boat boarding party should have included any number of clearly marked neutral nation observers, brought along with cameramen to record a very by the numbers search of the vessels for "contraband". This happens all the time in international waters. etc., etc., etc. |

Did they do this of their own free will? I'll bet Arraf told them of the danger, and I'll bet the passengers got on the boat knowing what may happen. What were they doing with all the knives and axes anyway? And why did they snatch away the soldier's gun if they were so peaceful? Why did they fire on the Israeli soldiers with it? This won't remain buried. Arraf was fully aware of the risks. If the passengers went along with it knowingly, it's the passengers' fault. I don't care who they are. If not all of the passengers were fully informed, it's Arraf's. Israel did what it should have done, and should do again until these idiots get it. They need to do it unflinchingly and unemotionally. I believe Israel explained to Arraf that they were willing to sort through the cargo and pass along authorized goods to the "Palestinians". So this should obviously be a political ploy to anyone with a brain. I am of the opinion that there will be a lot of ululating with the hope of getting a lot of sympathy, and it won't die off right away because this is the only chance they will get at it. But I'll bet it does die off, and Israel won't be any worse off. We'll see. |

Those who want to believe Isreal is the enemy will. I actually think this might be a good thing. It will be much harder to garner volunteers when those University students suddenly realize they might get killed. |

The Islamists are building a worldwide movement. 911 might have been a violent fist and set them back a fair bit But they learned. And they are slowly isolating Israel and the US - and they are doing it with PR and al Jazeera. You should see the UN meetings how they go with all the arab states putting resolution after resolution condemning israel. They are building consensus around the world, beaming al Jazeera into remote parts of Africa. Watch the African states swing their votes at the UN in years to come. If we do not reverse the tide, we will find ourselves isolated globally by their very effective use of propaganda. |

| #11 Apparently Israeli soldiers were attacked with knives and axes, one stabbed, four injured. They said they were shot at. Al Jazeera is/was broadcasting footage of them being attacked with sticks. It is a problem that Al Jazeera gets to be the news organisation of record they are hardly unbiased they represent a massive threat and can forward the goals of political islam with a huge budget. See other story posted from the economist "al Jazeera gaining traction". Al Jazeera will amplify the public relations disaster for Israel that this will be.
