BCL leader shot dead in city
2010-04-14
[Bangla Daily Star] Criminals yesterday gunned down a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader at Shekhertek in the capital in brought daylight.

Locals and police said Chhatra League Ward-43 unit General Secretary Mohammad Ahiduzzaman, 25, was killed after he had lunch with his mates at a local restaurant.

Soon after the killing, police arrested alleged gang members of Nabi Group--Gazi Ohid and Babu.

According to witnesses, three criminals sprayed several bullets at Ahid on Road-12 of Shekhertek around 2:00pm after Ahid and his six associates had their lunch.

Abu Noman, Ahid's associate who witnessed the attack, said three teen-aged boys made the attack from the back and ran away firing blank shots.

Mohammad Tutul of "Tomato Obhijat Khabar Ghar", where Ahid had lunch and was almost a regular, told The Daily Star, "After having lunch Ahid and his friends left and were attacked only 40 yards away."

Ahid's elder sister Rosy Begum told The Daily Star, "For several months Ahid had been saying that his life was in danger and he might be killed anytime."

Rosy speculated that a local leader of Mohammadpur-Adabar area might have been responsible for the killing.

Sources said he might have been killed due to feuds over control of waste-garment trading or a spring fair held in the area.

Locals said Ahid was engaged in waste-garment trading and he had a feud with Nabi Group's chief Nabi.

They said Ahid was also the main organiser of Bashanta Mela, which has been going on for the last 15 days at Nabodoy Housing Balurmath. They said lottery and gambling were the main attractions of the fair. They said he might have had a feud with local ruling party leaders over the share of money of the fair.

According his family sources, he received stab wounds when some of his rivals attacked him last year and four months ago he was attacked again.

Adabar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam told The Daily Star that they have detained two cadres of Nabi Group.
