#29  Has anyone blamed it on Globull Worming yet?

Give it a couple of days. The GW religion is full of people like Danny Glover, whose thought processes and understanding are so garbled that they think climate affects earthquakes, or the other way round, etc.

#28  Has anyone blamed it on Globull Worming yet?

No but its clearly the fault of the previous administration.

#26  The original quake has triggered a large number of secondary quakes. Google Earth shows at least 50 - mag 5.0 to 6.5.

#22  For your amusement, MSNBC asks 'Is nature out of control?'

Left unanswered: are seismic events packing the energy of ~15 billion tons of TNT ever under 'control?'

#20  Any rantburgers in Crescent City, Ca, or coastal Alaska? The bays may have problems - will the waves coincide with high tide?

#19  US Coast Guard has asked all ships to move out of Hawaiian ports and the siren to evacuate has sounded. Maybe 8' waves on all sides of the islands may be hit with smaller bays hit with larger waves.

#18  Chile joined the OECD a month ago. So the richest and poorest countries in Latin America have been devastated by temblors in the last 6 months.

#17  A huge wave measuring 7.7 feet (2.34 metres) crashed onto the Chilean coastal town of Talcahuano early Saturday triggered by a massive earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Talcahuano is on a deep north facing bay about 100 km south of the epicenter. The bay would have concentrated the tsunami.

I doubt the wave will amount to much on the other side of the Pacific.

Let me get out my checkbook - or not.

#8  According to Reuters, 78 known dead, quake centered near the college town of Concepcion, some damage to buildings and roads/bridges. Nothing like Haiti, though, because earthquakes are fairly common in Chili, so they build appropriately. AP has more, including historical perspective:

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.

It did not have details on the size of the tsunami.
