US ambassador: arms deal to mention missile shield |
2010-02-11 |
General Secretary Obama bends over once again. The U.S. ambassador to Russia says Washington and Moscow have agreed that a new arms control treaty will mention a link between offensive nuclear arms and defenses against them. Ambassador John Beyrle's statement on his blog has signaled a potential breakthrough in the U.S.-Russian talks on a successor to the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. Beyrle said Thursday that President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have agreed the treaty will contain a provision on the connection between strategic offensive and defensive weapons. Obama and Medvedev linked the two in a statement last July, but Washington had resisted Russia's push for an explicit link between them in a successor to the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. |
