Hamas: Israel assassinated Hamas commander in Dubai
2010-01-30
[Ma'an] Israel killed a top Hamas official in Dubai last week, an official told Reuters on Friday. The official, identified as Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, was thought to be behind the assassinations of two Israeli soldiers, Avi Sasportas and Ilan Saadon, in the 1980s. He was a member of Hamas' military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.
Thought he died of cancer?
"I cannot reveal the circumstances. We are working with the authorities in the United Arab Emirates," said Izzat Al-Rishq, a member of Hamas' politburo, speaking in Damascus.
The teevee said Hamas was claiming the corpse showed signs of electrical shocks to the head, which'd be a fairly unique method of assassination. Of couse faking cancer symptoms and treatment would be, too.
Al-Rishq said he was killed on 20 January in Dubai, the day after he arrived from Syria, where he lived.
"Hi! I'm here in Dubai! [Gasp!] Rosebud!"
Al-Mabhouh had served as a liaison between Iran and Hamas, according to various reports, helping to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip. He had been jailed several times by Israel, whose forces reportedly destroyed his Gaza home at some point. "We in Hamas hold the Zionist enemy responsible for the criminal assassination of our brother, and we pledge to God and to the blood of the martyrs and to our people to continue his path of jihad and martyrdom," read a statement on a Hamas' news site.

#11  a little more, HT to Weasel Zippers:
A HIT squad that killed a top Hamas commander in his Dubai hotel room injected him with a drug that induced a heart attack, photographed all the documents in his briefcase and left a “do not disturb” sign on the door.
The body of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, 50, was discovered by staff at the luxury Al Bustan Rotana hotel after lunch on January 20. There were no suspicious signs and local doctors diagnosed a heart attack.

Nine days later, after blood samples sent to Paris for analysis showed signs of poison, Hamas announced his death and blamed Mossad, the Israeli overseas intelligence service, for the assassination.

According to Middle Eastern sources, al-Mabhouh, who was the official responsible for arranging arms supplies from Iran to Gaza, was tracked from the moment he boarded Emirates flight EK 912 at Damascus at 10.05 on January 19.

He was said to have been travelling on a false passport and on arrival in Dubai was followed by two men described by local police as “Europeans carrying European passports”.

damn, I wassa hoping for a prolonged torture session and slow death, just the Mahmoud woulda done it

#10  I am reading a book on the Mossad right now Gideon's Spies by Gordon thomas. Fascinating stuff. This exrta-judicial termination certainly sounds like the Mossad's type of work.

#9  sweet science ...

not sure arclight is the answer but it certainly adds food for thought , all else has failed over the past 40 years .. I do wonder if its worth a shot ... B-52s do send a rather precise message of intent and desire to at least bring people to the table , fried or not

#8  I wonder what Hamass would claim if the US ran a six- or 9-ship ARCLIGHT strike down through the heart of Gaza. I'm sure the rest of the Muddled East would have heart attacks and other such reactions. Maybe we should lend the Israelis the aircraft, along with "reserve" crews to prevent nodding off during such a long flight. I'm sure it would end the Hamass/PLA impasse, at least.

#6  Bethlehem – Ma'an – A four-person squad of Israeli Shin Bet and Mossad operatives arrived in Dubai on European passports to assassinate Muhammad Al-Mabhouh, an alleged liaison between Iran and Hamas, Israeli media reported on Saturday.

According to the Israeli news-site Inyan Merkazi, the assassination squad interrogated Al-Mabhouh in his hotel room before killing him.

The squad returned with "precious information" attained following Al-Mabhouh's interrogation, which was focused on arms deals between Hamas and Iran, as well as how arms are smuggled into the West Bank, the news-site reported.

Stay tuned...

#3  Interesting that this took place at the same time or shortly after Israeli minister Uzi Landau visited UAE for a renewable energy conference.
