| UN appoints new UNRWA commissioner general |

| United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed a new Commissioner General for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) following the retirement of former head Karen Abu Zaid in December. According to the UN News, Ban made the decision to appoint Italian national Filippo Grandi following consultations with UNRWA's Advisory Commission. The appointment period started on Wednesday. The 53-year-old Italian served as UNRWA's Deputy Commissioner General between 2005-7, and according to the UN is a "strong advocate for the rights and dignity of Palestine refugees and an excellent manager, he has been instrumental in the success of the Agency's comprehensive and far-reaching management reforms. He brings to his new position a record of outstanding service under the banner of the United Nations." Grandi was previously responsible for political affairs at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), where he served as the Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative. |
