Common misconceptions about the Nobel Peace Prize |
2009-10-09 |
![]() More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments. The timing of this being published at the same time that Noobama's prize is announce is either serendipitous or maybe the author felt compelled somehow to see if this might possibly be some kind of, err, "mistake". Personally, I think it's political payback of some kind, as Noobama gets to keep the $1.4M purse that happens to come along with this prize. What are the chances that he'll donate this to charity? And do I read things right that he was nominated for this prize about ten seconds after he became president elect? No more shred of credibility for the Nobel Peace prize, I guess. |

#4 The Peace Prize is awarded by a group of five politicians from Norway. That's it. Any moral legitimacy or authority is based on their choice being at least reasonable in the eyes of the public. If their choice is patently unreasonable then the moral dimension is lost. It's just five Norwegians (fallible humans, not conduits of divine wisdom) deciding to give a sum of money to a specific person or persons. Neither by an election or by any other process has this committee been authorized to set "policy goals" that the United States or any other country is obliged to pursue. |
