'Militants plotting attacks in New Delhi arrested'
2009-08-08
Indian authorities claimed to have arrested two suspected members of the outlawed Hizbul Mujahideen on Friday for allegedly planning attacks in New Delhi.

The suspects, identified as Javed Ahmed and Ashiq Ali, were taken into custody on Thursday night, said police spokesman Rajan Bhagat. "The two men are residents of [Indian-held] Kashmir and had been trained in Pakistan by the Hizbul Mujahideen," senior police official PN Aggarwal told reporters. The arrests came amid tightened security ahead of India's independence day on August 15. Hundreds of extra police and paramilitary forces have been deployed across New Delhi following intelligence reports suggesting a series of possible attacks. "We were working in close coordination with intelligence agencies which ultimately resulted in the arrests," a senior police officer said.
