Unemployment in Chicago area reaches 11.3 percent |
2009-07-25 |
The unemployment rate in the Chicago metropolitan area continued to surge in June, reaching 11.3 percent, up from 6.9 percent a year earlier and the highest level since July of 1983, the Illinois Department of Employment Security said Thursday. The rate is up from 10.7 percent in May and from 9.9 percent in April. It exceeds the state's 10.3 percent rate and the nation's 9.5 percent rate. The jump was evident Thursday at a career fair in downtown Chicago that drew 1,010 job seekers. That's more than double the usual Chicago turnout of 350 to 500, National Career Fairs event coordinator Bob Hillman said. Talking to hopefuls were 32 companies, "from Comcast to Avon." "The numbers are going up and up all over," Hillman said. "It's not like it's Chicago by itself." Regardless of the unemployment rate, Hillman's advice is the same: Be open-minded to opportunities. "The hardest thing for a lot of job seekers to understand is . . . just because you've never done something doesn't mean you couldn't do it or wouldn't like doing it." |
