Saudi FM: US aid to Israel should cease
2009-06-07
[Iran Press TV Latest] Amidst frosty relations between Washington and Tel Aviv, the Saudi foreign minister says Washington should cut off its aid to Tel Aviv should it continue its occupation of Arab land.

"If you give aid to someone and they indiscriminately occupy other people's lands, you bear some responsibility."
In an interview with Newsweek magazine to be published on June 15, Prince Saud al-Faisal said that Washington would be held 'responsible' for Israel's actions if its unquestionable support for Tel Aviv continues. "If you give aid to someone and they indiscriminately occupy other people's lands, you bear some responsibility."

His remarks come amid a deepening rift between Washington and Tel Aviv over a whole host of issues including the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state which the Obama administration insists on and the hawkish government of Benjamin Netanyahu is strongly opposed to.

Al-Faisal added that the US support was the main bargaining chip in the Middle East peace process and should be used to restore peace in the region.

"The United States has the means to persuade the Israelis to work for a peaceful settlement. It needs to tell them that if it is going to continue to help them, they must be reasonable and make reasonable concessions."

He said Arab states could only consider relations with Israel as an incentive, adding that the normalization of ties would not be realized unless Tel Aviv retreated from occupied land.

"If we put that [normalization] before the return of Arab land we are giving away the only bargaining chip in the hands of Arab countries," the foreign minister said.

#17  Given what I know of - and have seen of - the Obama adminsitration, I wouldn't be surprised - indeed - I expect US aid to be cut off to Israel.

Then again I fully expect aid to triple to Israel once a non-muslim, non-anti-american, non-socialist administration is elected back into office. I just pray that takes place before Iran launches their nukes on Israel.

#16  Ccsquid Am I missing something? If I give money and that money is used to buy US weapons, am I not helping US workers?

#15  I think most people fail to realize just how much foreign aid we give but when the full impact of all the budgetary spending and bail-outs are felt, this should be among the first cuts. And the UN. National self-interest is at stake, as we are imploding in debt.

Aren't they made in India, like everything else? Or is it Bangladesh?

#12  . . . Arab land.

There's that reference again. Is it on the title deeds down at the court house? Is it a trace mineral detectable with appropriate instruments? Is it alienable?

The market is rapidly hastening the end of the oil era, and some "lands" may be better able to deal with that than others. Fortunately the "arabs" have their high-tech, tourism, and service sectors to carry on their dominant role in world trade.

#11  Dirty little secret is, as technology advances, we near the point where all that foreign aid boodle could be redirected to put Amecica on a true, effective defensive military posture vis our own territory. Of course, that would shift the kickbacks the state department boys get over to murtha's buddies...

#10  I never understood it either. Especially the 2 billion a year to Egypt. It is put up and shut up money, plain and simple.

I would cut all foreign aid to all countries immediately if I was in charge, then look at ones that need it on a case by case basis. If a country needed aid, like from a disaster or something, I would send it in the form of contractors and goods to build up the country, show the people how to maintain it and then leave.

#7  With the possible exception of assistance for natural disasters, ALL foreign aid should be dropped! Even that received by California and Washington D.C. Friends that must be purchased are not friends at all, they are dependents.

#6   I never understood why a developed country gets billions in aid every year.

Why should Israel be any different than NATO?
Western Europe had a greater combined population and GDP than the US since the 70s. Socialism is easy when someone else gets to pick up the bill for the critical services.

#4  The Newsweek article is here.

Another quote:
Q:In Washington, much was made of the image of President Obama leaning down in front of king Abdullah when he first met him.

A:Yes, he bowed. But remember, he is also of a culture that respects age. It was not demeaning or servile bowing to somebody. When you see an older person, you respect him. I think those who made a fuss about it would do well to take such good manners to heart.

The Saudi FM doesn't even make token effort to save "Sort of God's" Obama's face.
But then, in their culture honor is not a concept that applies to a slave an infidel African American.

To offset, in small part, what USA is giving to Israel's enemies?

#1  I never understood why a developed country gets billions in aid every year. I know it started under Carter as a gigantic bribe to get the Egyptians to stop attacking. Why the Isrealis got the same bribe, I'll never know.
