Russia in talks with Jordan about nuclear energy
2009-05-24 | |
Touqan told Petra that the Russian proposal was in the framework of a cooperation agreement signed between JNEC and RusAtom on Friday, pointing out that it was the fifth deal the Kingdom had sealed with world countries as part of its efforts to acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Under the agreement, Jordanian students would receive scholarships to study nuclear and physics engineering at Russian universities and institutes. Touqan expected that 10 students would receive scholarships to study in Russia during the next academic year. Jordan had signed similar nuclear deals with France, China, South Korea and Canada. The Kingdom imports 95 percent of its energy needs, and is considered as one of world's ten poorest countries in potable water resources.

#2 Jordan as Red Sea coastline. Not much. The cool thing about nukes, is their waste heat is great to drive desalination plants. The bad thing is placing plutonium generators in the custody a religion that believes it is their highest duty to conquer and convert, kill or enslave infidels. |

#1 Nuclear energy would be a good idea for Jordan, but I don't see anywhere where there's enough water for cooling. I could easily see a long-term agreement between Israel and Jordan for Israel to supply electricity from nuclear plants on the Mediterranean to Jordan via high-voltage power lines. A nuclear reactor to provide power to both Israeli and Jordanian sectors of Eilat would also be workable. The same plant could also provide the energy to pump sea-water from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Red Sea, also to the benefit of both parties. Building a cadre of trained personnel in nuclear physics and engineering would be a good thing, but I don't think Jordan can support an economically feasible nuclear reactor. |
