Top U.S. Admiral Speaks about N.Korean Nukes
2009-05-21
Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said there are reports indicating that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is considering a new nuclear test, but Mullen declined to confirm or deny them. He also voiced concern over North Korea's nuclear weapons and said the communist country was isolating itself further from the international community as a result of its weapons program.

It is unclear whether Mullen's comments meant to imply that Washington was formally acknowledging North Korea as a nuclear state, a semantic question that appears to concern U.S. officials less than their South Korean counterparts. Officially, the U.S. government refuses to recognize the communist country as a nuclear power, and North Korea's first nuclear test in 2006 is considered by experts to have been only marginally successful.

Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates also voiced serious concerns over North Korea's weapons of mass destruction, warning they could fall into the hands of international terrorist groups. In an interview with CBS, Gates said that such weapons could potentially be obtained through Pakistan as well as North Korea.

#6  Ala WORLD MIL FORUM > IIUC seems CHINA is viewing as a DE FACTO FLASHPOINT/PROVOCATION FOR NT WAR VIETNAM's attempts to extend its sovereignty into the disputed SOUTH CHINA SEA ISLANDS + geogol CONTINENTAL SHELF. The PRC = PLA, PLAN fears such a strategic or realist move by Vietnam will all but DENY China access into the STRAITS OF MALACCAS = INDIAN OCEAN, + before Chin can fully establish itself on new "Dual use" or PLA milbases/milfacs at GWADAR, PK, + LAN LAN ISLAND, MYANMAR, ETC.

Also, WORLD AFFAIRS BOARD > PHILIPPINES TO IMPROVE ITS MIL STRUCTURES ON KELAYAAN ISLANDS [ aka SPRATLEYS].

#5  He doesn't "have the keys". He hasn't has the keys for a while.

In all seriousness, I wonder if he hasn't had them for a very long time.

#4  Kimmie has Alzheimers and schizophrenia and is completely mad--why he still has the keys and is driving is beyond me. SK isn't the only nation at risk. If the US won't do anything singlehandedly about the danger, especially since he willingly shares with terrorists, the Chinese, Japanese, India, Russians, Europe, and Israel should be made to see the danger extends beyond the Nork borders.

#3  JosephM, perhaps for the same reason we take the car keys away from beloved older relatives who've developed Alzheimers and glaucoma. Ancient cultures are lovely to attract the tourist trade, but matter not a whit in the intercourse of nations.

#2  Historically, Joe, the answer would be 'because the US is a lot stronger and has the will to MAKE you give them up.' Now, the best reason would be that they cost a lot and gain you nothing militarily (since using them would result in YOUR destruction). The best reason TO build them is to get the US to 'buy' them from you.
All this pre-supposes rationality of the guy with the key.

#1  As a newly arrived statesider to Guam had described, IRAN + NORTH KOREA, ETC are inherently OLDER NATIONS = CULTURES-SOCIETIES than the USA, OR EVEN NATO = EUROPE, SO WHY SHOULD THEY GIVE UP NUCTECHS ANDOR NCUWEAPS JUST BECUZ (1) A NEW/YOUNG POWER CALLED "AMERICA/USA" WANTS OR DEMANDS THEM TO; + (2) THE USA WON'T EVER GIVE UP ITS OWN NUCWEAPONS???
