A BRITISH soldier was killed in action in southern Afghanistan yesterday, the Ministry of Defence said.The Royal Marine, from 45 Commando, came under fire in an area southwest of Sangin in the strife-torn Helmand province and died of his wounds while being flown to hospital. The marine was part of a patrol supporting a bomb disposal team. His next of kin had been informed, the MoD said.
The soldier was the seventh member of the British military to die in Afghanistan this year and the 144th British fatality since the start of operations in 2001.
