DR Congo: Rebels reach strategic DRC city |
2008-11-15 |
![]() Eyewitnesses say that more and more foreign troops are becoming involved in the conflict. Angolan and Zimbabwean troops are said to be operating in the east of the country. It is also being suggested that the Rwandan army is paying General Laurent Nkunda's rebels. Angola and Rwanda deny any involvement in the fighting. The reports of foreign involvement are adding to fears that the conflict will lead to a renewed war in the DRC. From 1998 to 2003, nine countries were involved in what was called by many Africa's World War, a war that led to the deaths of more than five million people, mainly from disease and starvation. The United Nations says more than 250,000 refugees have now fled the fighting. |
