The five seemingly coordinated attacks Wednesday occurred in the breakaway republic of Somaliland and in Somalia's Puntland region which have largely been spared the deadly violence seen in the country's south.

Muse Gelle Yusuf, a governor in Puntland, said local cleric Sheik Mohamed Ismail was arrested Wednesday and was being questioned.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts, but the U.S. says they appeared to have the markings of an al-Qaida attack.-
