Don't publish matter promoting hatred, Bahrain warns papers
2008-06-29
The theme of the day seems to be press censorship ...
MANAMA - Close on the heels of blocking of three web sites last week, newspapers in Bahrain have been warned not to publish reports and articles promoting sectarianism or hatred in the society. Violators would face suspension as part of a national drive to preserve peace and harmony in the kingdom.

Media Adviser at the Ministry of Information Salah Ahmed said that the drive isn't only for web sites but also for newspapers that violate the Press law and the Cabinet decision. The three web sites engaged youths from different schools of thought in dialogue of hatred by inciting them to resort to violence.

Bahrain has six Arabic and two English dailies and two weekly newspapers, while one more daily publication will be started soon.

He said that news, articles and columns in all publications would be monitored and those promoting sectarianism would be suspended. "We are monitoring all publications on a daily basis and looking forward to all newspapers to perform their national duty of protecting unity," Salah said.

The Cabinet last Sunday formed a watchdog committee headed by the Interior Ministry with representatives from Justice and Islamic Affairs and Information ministries. Besides monitoring the media, the committee is responsible for monitoring any violations at mosques aimed at disparaging the image of leaders, the national unity and Bahrain's Arab identity.
