WHO opens office in Baghdad
2008-06-29
BAGHDAD - The World Health Organisation has opened a permanent office in Baghdad, the UN announced on Saturday, a sign of improving security in Iraq's war-torn capital.

Doctor Nae'ema al-Gasseer will be based in Baghdad as part of efforts to give more support to local people, Staffan de Mistura, the UN envoy for Iraq, announced in a statement. "We will continue to provide more support to the Iraqis through our programmes in many areas of activity", Mistura said.

The UN has led vaccination campaigns of Iraqi children and helped fight a recent epidemic of cholera but some critics say it has not done enough in the violence-wracked country, especially after it scaled back operations here. That move was prompted by the August 19, 2003 attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad, which killed 22 people, including the chief of mission, Sergio Viera di Mello.

Last month Mistura said that despite major tensions there were signs the situation is improving.
