Study: 1 in 4 adults in NYC have herpes virus
2008-06-10
A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.
I haven't spent all that much time in Noo Yawk, and when I have, I've kept my pants on. I'm kinda glad I did.
The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.
I didn't realize it was that high. Monogamy does have its benefits...
The department says genital herpes can double a person's risk for contracting HIV. Herpes can cause painful sores, but most people have no recognizable symptoms. The health department urges consistent use of condoms, and says its STD clinics offer free, confidential herpes testing.

#4  I thought the rate was higher, 1 in 4 adults. So looking it up at emedicine.com:

#The prevalence of HSV-2 infections has dramatically increased in recent years. The third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994) found that 22% of the general US population older than 12 years had antibodies to HSV-2. In another survey of patients in a suburban primary care office, 25.5% of patients were seropositive for HSV-2. Approximately 500,000 primary infections occur each year.

Factors that increase the frequency of HSV-2 infection in older adolescents and adults include sex (more women than men), race (more African Americans than whites), marital status (more divorced individuals than single or married individuals), and place of residence (more city residents than suburban residents).

# The prevalence of HSV-2 antibodies among African Americans is 3-4 times higher than that among whites. Seroprevalence among women of childbearing age in the late 1970s was estimated to be 50% for African Americans and 20% for whites. By the late 1980s, rates of infection had increased to approximately 60% for African Americans and 35% for whites. As shown in 2 nationwide surveys of HSV-2 seroprevalence in the last 2 decades, the cumulative lifetime incidence of HSV-2 reaches 25% in white women, 20% in white men, 80% in African American women, and 60% in African American men.

# Studies have indicated that the seroprevalence of HSV-2 antibodies among Hispanics ranges from 17-22.3%.

And P2K in #3 has it exactly right. Tiny differences in survival rates over hundreds of years have massive effects.

#3  I didn't realize it was that high. Monogamy does have its benefits...

A lot of older human behaviors often manifested as 'tradition' or 'taboos' were founded upon the ancients figuring out that there was some negative consequences to certain acts. The ancients didn't understand the underlying causal factor but they did comprehend cause>effect. So they implemented rituals and prohibitions, a bit religious, a bit ceremonial. Today we're so modern that we're above all that superstition and we reap what we sow.
