The United Nations will “watch closely” a peace deal between Pakistan’s new government and pro-Taliban militants in Swat, the UN peacekeeping chief said on Thursday. Speaking during a visit to Afghanistan, UN Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Guehenno said Afghanistan and Pakistan must work together to tackle extremism. Asked about the deal in Swat, Guehenno said it could “only be judged on the impact it has on security.” Guehenno said the stability of the two countries was linked. |
