'Hezbollah plans Iran-backed coup'
2008-05-10
Lebanon's March 14 bloc has accused the Hezbollah movement of orchestrating an 'armed coup' after the opposition took control of Beirut. "The armed and bloody coup which is being implemented aims to return Syria to Lebanon and extend Iran's reach to the Mediterranean," the coalition said in a statement read by Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Friday.

Iran has rejected allegations that it is fueling violence in Lebanon. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mohammad-Ali Hosseini, on Friday stressed Tehran's 'tireless efforts' in aiding Lebanese political parties to reach a compromise.

The Western-backed government on Tuesday decided to launch a probe into a communications network set up by the Hezbollah Movements. It also sacked Beirut Airport's Security Chief over alleged links to Hezbollah. Since then, fierce clashes erupted between the opposition and pro-government groups. On Friday, western-backed media outlets described the clashes as a sectarian strife. That is while both Shia and Sunni figures say the nature of clashes is solely political.

#1  How about "Hezbollah executes Iran-backed coup", instead?
