Mayday! Mayday!
2008-05-01
May Day occurs on May 1 and refers to any of several public holidays. In many countries, May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, which celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. . . .

It also used to be an excuse for the commies to parade around Red Square with tanks and missiles and impress us all with how mighty they were.

Mayday is an emergency code word used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications. It derives from the French venez m'aider, meaning 'come to my aid'/"come [to] help me." It is used to signal a life-threatening emergency by many groups, such as police forces, pilots, the fire brigade, and transportation organizations. The call is always given three times in a row ("Mayday Mayday Mayday") to prevent mistaking it for some similar-sounding phrase under noisy conditions, and to distinguish an actual mayday call from a message about a mayday call. . . .

#5  They're partying in Gaza too...

Gaza – Ma'an – Hundreds of unemployed Palestinian workers from the Gaza Strip rallied on Thursday in a May Day protest at the dire conditions they are enduring under the Israeli-led embargo.

In an expression of their despair™, the rallying workers performed the absentee prayer - an Islamic prayer similar to a funeral prayer, that is usually performed for fighters missing in actions.

Followed by the invocation to Our Lady of the Foot Wound.

Many of the workers held up signs offering their body parts for sale to raise money to feed their families.

The pancreas? How much, Mahmoud?

Others set fire to their work tools which they now deem useless.

After which, they immediately went down to the local UNRWA office to demand new ones.

Abu Muhammad, an unemployed worker told Ma'an's reporter, "I came here to announce that I am willing to sell my body parts because I have no other way to provide basic food for my family, and the situation is getting worse."

Maybe you can become a fuel truck hijacker for Hamas?

Other workers said they frequently hear about aid shipments reaching the coastal sector but claim they have never received any of the much-needed aid.

Geez, I wonder who's getting it?

Nabil Mabhuh, the coordinator of the Gaza Strip laborers' union, said that 350 factories in the Gaza Strip have closed as a result of the siege rendering dozens of thousands of workers unemployed.

#4  Back in the '50s the closest thing we kids did to a May basket was gather dandelions for our mother. There were always a lot available on May 1st.

Mao, People's Republic of China
Stalin, Union of Socialist Soviet Republics
Hitler, National Socialist German Workers' Party

100 Million dead in the 20th Century and still counting.

#2  I miss a lot of things from the 70's, they are just as far removed now as the 50's.
A Brave New World Deacon Blues. Or so they tell me.
Personally, I'm not real impressed.

#1  Back in the 50's we made May Baskets and left them at the doors of our Grandmothers. Lots of families did it. I do miss a lot of the things from when I was a child.
