New Ethics Law Causes 150 Government Resignations
2008-04-22
Oregon lawmakers announced Monday they will review state ethics laws after about 150 public officials resigned in recent weeks rather than disclose personal information.

The review comes after the Legislature made major ethics law changes last year. Those changes added new requirements for what has to be listed on the Statement of Economic Interest that public officials file each year. The changes also added more than 1,000 elected and appointed officials to those who must file the forms...
I wonder how many of those officials names were followed with (D).

#3  Probably similar to why contracting-specialists are leaving the government. The threat of legal liability should you be defined as having 'screwed up' just isn't worth it.

#2  You mean like the blood relations or marriage relations they've hired or directed contracts to? Blood can be very personal.

#1  Problem: Too many public officials resigning because of potential ethics violations.
(Democratic)Solution: Change the rules to redefine "ethics violations".
Disclaimer: actually, the story says they resigned rather than reveal personal information, so it may not be that they resigned because of ethics violations. It is possible that they just didn't want to reveal personal information.
