Police in Indian Kashmir have shot dead a militant accused of masterminding a series of explosions outside courts in three cities in Uttar Pradesh last year, officials said on Friday. Bashir Ahmad, a senior member of the Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami (HuJI), was shot dead on Thursday night in a gun battle with police in Cahtru village in south Kashmir, according to police. He was suspected of plotting nearly simultaneous blasts near courts in Varanasi, Faizabad and Lucknow in November which killed 13 people and wounded 80 more. Many of the victims were lawyers. |
