Suicide bomber, 13, carried chocolate
2008-01-21
A 13-year old holding a box of chocolates and wearing a vest packed with explosives blew himself up among a group of tribal leaders, becoming one of the youngest suicide bombers since the US-led invasion, Iraqi police said.

Hospital officials said six people were killed and 10 wounded in the blast on Sunday in the Western city of Falluja.

Police said he was the son of one of the five most-wanted leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

A tribal chief, Hadi Hussein al-Isawi, was among those killed in the attack on a meeting of leaders of the Anbar Awakening Council, a US-supported group that has turned against al-Qaeda in Iraq. Five of the wounded were reported to be in a critical condition.

The attack was the second deadly bombing in as many days in Anbar, where violence has increased in recent months after local tribes joined forces with the US military to push Sunni Islamist al-Qaeda out of the vast region. Sunni Arab tribes rebelled against al-Qaeda because of its indiscriminate killing of civilians and harsh interpretation of Islam.

The US military has warned that al-Qaeda will try to make a comeback in Anbar, where it once held swathes of territory until many of its gunmen were driven out in the past year.

■ US war planes pounded suspected al-Qaeda havens on the southern edge of Baghdad on Sunday night, hitting more than 30 targets in a 35-bomb attack, the military said yesterday. It is the third such operation in the area this month. The US has not released casualty figures, but a US military spokesman said that 1023 suspected extremists had been arrested and 121 killed.

#7  I wonder: should the punk kid's entire family be found with bullets to their heads, might it serve as a warning to others?

No...of course not. We're dealing with muslims. I almost forgot

#6  "#4 #3: If they are sending their own sons to get killed, AQI must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Good, no "Next generation" of boomers."

Good, no next generation of LEADERS.
Booming is generally reserved for members of the lower, canon fodder classes.

#5  Children ...

Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Violence is increasing in Anbar? Not based on everything else I've read. But I see that meme in 2 articles in today's Iraq section. Is it a revised talking point regarding Anbar?
