UAE could have women judges
2008-01-17
ABU DHABI - The Ministerial Committee for Legislation recently approved the draft law amending the judiciary law to allow women to become judges. The draft would now go to the UAE Cabinet for its approval.

At its meeting chaired by Counsellor Mohammed bin Nukhaira Al Dhahiri, the committee approved the amendment under which a member of the judiciary could be either male or female instead of the present provision that only a man could become a judge. Al Dhahiri said another amendment to the law was that a graduate of the Judicial Training Institute could work in the judiciary soon after graduation. Till now, the person had to spend four years working at the public prosecution before joining the judiciary.

The amendments were in compliance with the latest international trends, which entitled the woman to her full rights, especially in the field of judiciary and courts to decide the sort of cases a woman would be more apt to take up the role of the judge, Al Dhahiri said.
