Go get yourself a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows, and curl up in your favorite chair with your notebook computer if you have one! You won't need any hankies here. Unless of course you're reading this in a cave or madrassa along the Afghan-Pakistan border somewhere (in which case drinking water from a mud puddle, sitting on a rock, blowing your nose into your turban, and seeking comfort from the community she-goat or ewe will have to do).

Petraeus seems to have quietly slipped into quite the offensive-operations mode a while ago without telling anyone. Well, without telling me at least. But I'll let it slide if I get to read these kinds of stories more and more.

When the two Army Rangers slipped inside the house of suspected assassins in the dark on Christmas morning in Mosul, they expected a fight. They got one.

#7  Blake, the Rangers' company commander, a 32-year-old major from Manassas, Va. Still way too much information was provided for my liking. I don't have a military background, just a paranoid one.

#6  Joe, you were a Ranger?

#5  They're RANGERS.

HMMMMM, "Blake" - not certain but methinks I may had served with or trained him once.

#4  Actually, they probably would have been fine except for that itty bitty piece of nylon strap that gave away the cover of their spider hole.

Anyone know if perhaps the night vision goggles would do a good job finding this kind of stuff if they turned out the lights in the house as part of the search? You'd think there would be some kind of temperature difference between regular floor and a spider hole cover.

#2  I am wondering how stupid it is to hunker into a bunker when that will result in heavier weapons used against your position. Running like hell would appear to be the way to go if you like living. Then again, these are muzzies and obviously not known for logical thought.

#1  A few hours later, at 2:04 a.m., Pete, 26, of Marlboro, N.J., and his fellow Rangers, with M-4 rifles and night-vision goggles, arrived at the suspected insurgents' doorstep.
Read the whole thing. Makes the RAB look like pikers.
