#3 fromthe (0506 issue): www.aeroclubsocal.org: the only eulogy of a fighter I am interested in: The glamorous and famed USN F-14 Tomcat (starred in Top Gun) will be flown into retirement in September. Entering service in the early 1970s, the Tomcat has been replaced on carriers by the F/A-18 Super Hornet. Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) and Northrop Grumman were both identified with the design, flight testing and constriction of the F-14. Both companies are now producing the Super Hornets. In years past, the Tomcat had an avid following of carirerbased pilots who initially fought hard within the Navy against their replacement by F-18s. It was a serious internal Naval battle. . |
