France's ambassador in Myanmar said Thursday that authorities have arrested thousands of people and raided monasteries, and that the number of killed and injured in last month's pro-democracy uprising has been underestimated. Jean-Pierre Lafosse, speaking on RTL radio from Myanmar, said police were using a curfew imposed last week to step up arrests, which he said had reached "hundreds, thousands" since the unrest. The protests were led by Buddhist monks and Lafosse described monasteries being "emptied out by entire trucks." He said there were "more wounded and killed than can be acknowledged or announced," but did not give an estimate.
