US drone 'shot down' in N Waziristan
2007-09-29
A US drone was reportedly shot down in North Waziristan and local residents seized the sensitive espionage paraphernalia onboard, security officials told Daily Times on Friday.
Such planes fly constantly over North and South Waziristan and use state-of–the-art equipment to track down Al Qaeda and Taliban elements.
Remains of the small plane were seen 25 kilometres west of Miranshah on the Dattakhel-Miranshah road near Land Muhammadkhel village, the officials said.

Military spokesman Maj Gen Waheed Arshad confirmed the incident. “The likely cause of the crash [is] technical malfunction. The local residents have seized the equipment onboard the plane,” he said.

Such planes fly constantly over North and South Waziristan and use state-of–the-art equipment to track down Al Qaeda and Taliban elements. A similar plane was shot down last year as well.

#10  there are people in Beijing who might pay well to take that junk off their hands

Why should they bother when Israel will happily sell them a nice functional one?

#9  Wholump, years back I suggested deploying disposable 'kamikaze' mini-drones. Think 'Hobby Hut' with a camera and an explosive charge. Deploy a bunch of them over a target area from a transport plane, with control stations on the plane. Fly them all around the town, into courtyards, whatever. If you spot a worthwhile target, crash into him and blow up. If you don't, land somewhere interesting and see who picks it up and where they take it. At an opportune moment, blow up.

#8  Maybe we should consider a 3 or 4 ounce self destruct packet on each of these things. Surely they could afford that much extra weight.

#5  I know you're all joking -- but haven't you ever watched Batman? There's a lot of super computers in caves.

#4  Well, there are people in Beijing who might pay well to take that junk off their hands, if their closer friends in Pakistan transport it.

Shrug. This will happen from time to time.

Eff almighty, with the high-speed logic analysers, bit probes and reverse engineering facilities they have, we're all doomed. DOOMED, I tellz yez!

#2  "The local residents have seized the equipment onboard the plane"

Good - everything is going according to plan. Now we've planted our spy equipment in their midst and they don't suspect a thing. Oh, gee - that's too bad.

#1  I bet the "local residents" know exactly what to do with those sensitive electronics: "Burn it!!!"
