![]() The victims were labourers who lost consciousness after buying the alcohol on Thursday. Television footage showed some lying in hospital beds as relatives fanned them. Bokhari said the police had arrested two men for illegally brewing alcohol and another two for selling the drink. “We have also suspended the services of three senior police officials because they failed to check the crime happening in their area,” he said. Twenty-three people died from poisoned alcohol in October last year in the central city of Multan. Officially two breweries operate in the country to provide alcohol to non-Muslim communities, who form three percent of the 160-million-member Muslim state. |

#5 Illegal drinking is fairly common in Muslim countries. In Egypt... When I was on assignment in Alexandria (Egypt), you could walk into any neighborhood market and buy: yeast, sugar, carboy and the other bits-n-pieces needed to whip up a batch of homage wine or beer. |

#2 Illegal drinking is fairly common in Muslim countries. In Egypt, there is an unofficial tradition for Muslims to drink when they are in a Christian home; but they are expected to stay there until they are sober. In north Lebanon drinking is accepted at certain events, like jazz festivals. They hold a lot of those; but not in the south. As for the deaths, they happened in Sindh which is less strict than the rest of the country. |
