| Muslim group loses cartoons libel case in Denmark |

| A Muslim group lost a libel case on Friday against the leader of a Danish anti-immigrant party who had accused its members of treason for publicizing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. A court ruled that Pia Kjaersgaard, leader of the Danish People's Party (DPP), did not libel the Islamic Faith Community when she accused some of its members of treason for traveling to the Middle East to publicize a Danish newspaper's publication of the drawings, which caused a worldwide uproar in 2006. The court said the term "treason" was not libelous because it was used extensively in public debate. It ordered the plaintiffs, a loose network of Danish Muslim organizations which says it represents 50,000 members, to pay Kjaersgaard 40,000 Danish crowns ($7,400) in costs. "We are very disappointed with the verdict and are considering an appeal," said Kasem Ahmad, a spokesman for the Muslim group. He added that the group would issue a fatwa, or religious edict, against Jyllands-Posten if it did not receive an apology from the paper. "It's too early to say any details of the fatwa," Ahmad said. "The fatwa is the last step and will also satisfy Muslims in the Middle East." Kjaersgaard said she was relieved at the outcome but had expected to win. "As a politician, I have both the duty and the right to express my opinion," she said. "I am convinced that many Danes felt as I did in the hectic winter days of 2006." |

| #15 The person who should be on trial here is Imam Ahmad Abu Laban. He's the one who brought at least 3 additional images, which HAD NEVER been published in any media source, to the middle east. These were the most provoking cartoons in th portfolio and were included to stir unrest among the Muslims. The result of which was numerous senseless deaths among the rioters. One of these, 'the Pig snout cartoon' was a photo from a French pig-squealing competition. Nothing to do with Islam or the prophet. |

Perhaps this judge decided that the Islamic Faith Community's actions bore direct connections to a certain Danish consulate in Damascus being torched. More's the pity that Danish imam Abu Laban was not brought up on specific charges of genuine treason for having purposefully added far more incendiary cartoons to those printed by Jyllands-Posten before distributing them in the Middle East. There is no question that these acts bore malicious intent against Denmark and caused direct economic harm through the ensuing wide spread Muslim boycott of Danish products. Moreover, it remains highly conspicuous that these cartoons had been released for some time before his actions (i.e., September 2005), without any extreme reaction from the global community until Laban's intentional misrepresentations fanned Muslim outrage to fever pitch almost half a year later. There is a somewhat happy ending to this story, Laban died of lung cancer earlier this year. Still, it would have served Western interests better if his perfidy had gained wider exposure through a highly public trial for treason. He added that the group would issue a fatwa, or religious edict, against Jyllands-Posten if it did not receive an apology from the paper. "It's too early to say any details of the fatwa," Ahmad said. "The fatwa is the last step and will also satisfy Muslims in the Middle East." This is nothing but a veiled threat of violence or murder and should be treated as such. Fatwan are distinct components of shari'a law and the recent London bombing attempts show yet more good cause to legally ban all forms of shari'a in the West. Such a move would make fatwa declarations a breach of law and prosecutable. This needs to be done immediately. |
