Former premier likens Australia PM to Hitler
2007-07-13
A comparison of Australian Prime Minister John Howard’s nationalism to that of Nazism prompted outrage on Thursday, with one top minister calling the former leader who called it an “unguided missile”. Former Prime Minister Paul Keating, who led the country from 1991 until defeated by Howard in 1996, used a speech on Wednesday to accuse Howard of being a Nazi-like nationalist rather than a patriot for disparaging multiculturalism and so-called “elites”.

“In Hitler’s day the term “elite” had not yet arrived. If it had, the nationalist in him would have compelled him to use it,” Keating told a festival at the Sydney Film School. “A nationalist will always remain suspicious of someone who does not seem to belong to his kind of people or more likely his kind of thinking. “Shades there of John Howard’s discomfort with Australia’s multicultural community and a disgust of the Islamic community.”

The animosity between Howard and Keating, once dubbed the “Lizard of Oz” by British newspapers for appearing to manhandle the Queen, is legendary in Australia. Howard has led the country for 11 years and through four election wins. Howard, lagging in polls ahead of a fifth election bid due later this year, said Keating ought to get on with life. “I’m a nationalist, I’m a patriot, I’m a believer and I feel sorry for Mr Keating,” he told reporters.

#15  Sarkozy just called, all upset. He said it was *his* turn to be Hitler for fifteen minutes

Is their anyway I can get in on this? I mean without being tied to Sarkozy? Hitler's the guy with the cool B&W stuff right?

Or...

It could be one of two forms of dementia...

Alzheimer's, or "Mad Cow" Disease

#13  Typical of a leftard to exactly invert the truth.

I've begun to think that much of the Liberal Left has gone through the looking glass and no longer regards any of this as an inversion. With their moral compasses demagnetized, there is no sense of polar reversal and all sense of irony is utterly lost as they flail about in a futile attempt to make reality fit their own arbitrary "facts".

#12  The "lizard of Oz," lol! Boy, I've forgotten how fine British humor truly is!

And, I'm with JAB on this one. Being called Hitler nowadays is a sign of respect in my book, the way it's tossed around.

Hitler admired arabs and was allied with "the islamic community". Hence the celebration of arabs at Aryan Nations websites and their ilk. Typical of a leftard to exactly invert the truth.

#10  I believe Keating is best-known for his liberal use of the word scumbag (not part of Aussie lingo at the time). Australians I spoke to at the time had no idea what the word meant. (This was before the internet became popular).

#7  Keating is roundly detested by many on both sides of politics. OTOH he gets respect in some quarters. I have a grudging respect for the man for his economic reforms, even though nothing would make me vote from him or his party. He also has a reputation for being foul-mouthed and a poor loser.

#6  As far as I know, Keating is not the best-liked bloke in Australia.

Typical British understatement.

#5  It's great that real leaders now have the balls to condemn multiculturalism as the failed experiment that it is. Of course, the people behind the idea get really, REALLY mad when someone tells them their idea isn't that great.

#4  Now that Saddam has been hanged, I'm at the point where I withhold respect for a world leader until he or she is compared to Hitler at least once. I'm sure this is not a first for Howard though. He's my kind of guy.
