The United States has urged for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan and expects Pakistan’s planned 2007 general elections to be “free and fair”, according to an updated report on US-Pakistan relations issued by the Congressional Research Service (CRS).
The report notes that Congress has annually granted one-year presidential authority to waive coup-related aid sanctions and that Pakistan is among the worldÂ’s leading recipients of US aid, obtaining about $3.4 billion in direct US assistance during 2002-2006, including nearly $1.5 billion in security-related aid. Pakistan has also received nearly $5 billion in reimbursements for its support of US-led counter-terrorism operations since 2001. |
