Details of the attack on Glasgow airport terminal
2007-06-30
A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport. Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath. They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.

Strathclyde Police said two people had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident. The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.

A Whitehall spokesman said the incident was not being treated as a national security threat however the prime minister is being kept informed of developments and is expected to chair a meeting of COBRA - the emergency committee later. First Minister Alex Salmond has activated emergency procedures.

One eyewitness at Glasgow Airport said: "I heard the sound of a car's wheels spinning and smoke coming out. I saw a Jeep Cherokee apparently as if it was trying to get right through the doors into the terminal building. There were flames coming out from underneath then some men appeared from in amongst the flames.

"The police ran over and the people started fighting with the police. I then heard what sounded like an explosion."

Eye-witness Richard Gray told BBC News 24: "A green Jeep was in the middle of the doorway burning. There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers, who he was trying to fight off. They've got him on the ground. The car didn't actually explode. There were a few pops and bangs which presumably was the petrol."

Stephen Clarkson said he saw people running towards him and "panicking" then noticed a crashed Cherokee jeep. He said he helped police restrain one of the men. "It was lucky that I was there," he said. "I managed to knock the man to the ground with my forearm and the police got on top of him and restrained him and put handcuffs on him."
Good job, old chap. Mind that the bobbies don't arrest you for assault.
Thomas Conroy, a maintenance worker at the airport believes the men deliberately tried to set the car on fire.

It looked like they had molotov cocktails with them. They sort of burst them round about the flames to make sure the car would go up big style. Within minutes it was up and the terminal caught as well
"It looked like they had molotov cocktails with them," he said. "They sort of burst them round about the flames to make sure the car would go up big style. Within minutes it was up and the terminal caught as well."

Dr Rak Nandwani was at the airport building to pick up relatives when he saw a plume of black smoke. He said: "The whole place has come to a standstill, the terminal building has been evacuated. I have spoken to my relatives and they have been moved to outside the building. They were told they could not pick their baggage up from the baggage collection area.

"There must be about 50 police cars at the airport. Me and my son, along with everyone else, have been moved to the car rental area."

Taxi driver Ian Crosby said: "This was no accident. This was a deliberate attack on Glasgow Airport."

Mr Crosby, who said he served in Northern Ireland, told how he shepherded people away from the scene in case of a secondary explosion or a nail-bomb.
The reaction of members of the public was not to help the men in the car, but to restrain them, he told the BBC. Mr Crosby, who said he served in Northern Ireland, told how he shepherded people away from the scene in case of a secondary explosion or a nail-bomb.

Two men, one of whom was reported to be badly burned, were seen being led away in handcuffs. Michael McRanor from Glasgow, photographed the arrest of one of the men.

A number of people are stuck on aeroplanes and on the airport strip while others have been told they might not be able to leave the airport complex until at least 2100 BST. Edinburgh Airport has been closed to vehicles which are being turned away on approach however, flights are operating as normal.

#28  It seems to be at the beginning of an acceleration curve

Personally, I hope like Hell that you're right, tw. The "J Curve" on this is so steep that there's little time left for anything but the most hurried rush to snuff jihadis on a continuous basis. Let's all hope this happens damn soon. Time ain't just a'wasting, it's in such short supply that the whole MME (Muslim Middle East) is going to run out of air in another few years.

#26  One thing I've noticed with interest recently is that a number of Muslims, current and former, have started speaking out publicly against the murderous acts and anti-human beliefs of the so-called radicals. It seems to be at the beginning of an acceleration curve, but if it really does continue to grow, things will certainly grow interesting. Much like dilemma Al Qaeda in Iraq now finds itself in, when the Sunni Triangle they'd been swimming so freely through is now working hard to drown them. (Overextended metaphors are so much fun!)

#25  Brilliant post, 4866, we're agreed then. Let's fucking nuke 'em.
Posted by: Shipman   2007-06-30 20:43

#24  Good post, Phuling Peacock4866. It is this sort of crapulence that has permanently shifted me away from supporting "moderate" Muslims over to banning Islam as a prelude to mass deportations. If you want a gauge of just how bad it's gotten, Islamic terrorist attacks are slowly eroding my adamant opposition to first use of nuclear weapons. On our current path we are guarranteed to experience an atrocity far worse than 9-11. That is simply not acceptable and if first use of nuclear weapons is the only way of thwarting that, then I am forced to reconsider my position. So far, this does not seem to be the case but each day's delay in dealing Islam a crippling blow brings us closer to something so undesirable as first use.

#23  GORT#15,
Thanks for the thought; it was 30 years ago and while the scars would keep her from winning the bathing suit competition in a beauty pageant, they didn't stop her from anything else.

No opiates for the burning jihadi!

#20  Comments from Hot Air:

These were only poor illegal aliens doing jobs that Americans are “unwilling to do.” When they recover from their injuries Bush can invite then here and give them amnesty. If anyone complains about this. Howdy Doody in South Carolina can call them “racists.”

What do you call a jihadist who pours gas on himself and then lights himself on fire?

Shish Kaboob.

What did the 72 Virgins say when the the Glasgow airport Jihadist got Heaven?

answer:”Your Hot!”

I wonder if they bought enough carbon offsets to cover this one.

#18  If 1 in 6 UK Muslims supports acts like the 7-7 terror

Actually it's 1 in 4 and that's against the very population who welcomed them, pay them a nice living for doing nothing, and protect them from a very deserved backlash. And yes, the number who support terrorism against the Rest of the West is even higher.

#16  Unfortunately, last week President Bush re-stated his administration's orientation to Muslims: noble partners in the GWOT, and enemies against the nominal handful of extremists.

Bin Laden t-shirts and memorabilia are sold all over the Muslim world. And photos of murderous jihadis are posted over the walls of Palestinian and Iraqi homes. What is the problem with understanding that most Muslims are supportive of terrorism? Even where they publically oppose it in states where they have immigrated, it is plain and obvious that they are using strategic deceit (al-taqiyah). Muslim terror cannot be solved by local policing or subsidized pseudo-integration of the enemy into western societies, as their relatives actively work for ethnic cleansing in their homelands. If 1 in 6 UK Muslims supports acts like the 7-7 terror, it stands to reason that the same or larger numbers support it elsewhere in the Free World. Why the hell doesn't this sink in?

#14  Until the West has the courage to see the truth about Mohammed and his 6th century religion that is mushrooming within our midst, many in the West will continue to try vainly to cohabit with Islam until we either submit or remove this defective theology from our communities.

Agreed. So far, mass deportations or internment looks like the only alternatives. This is really sucky but Islam provides no other options for dealing with it, save flat-out annihilation.

After posting my comment at #2, I scrolled down and saw a similar posting and then read your comments there being similar to mine.

Europe and many in society have been striving for multi-culturalism. The American society has been striving for liberty and freedom. Islam is a force that is not only opposed to multi-culturalism and liberty, it is a theology the demands it's followers fight stringently, to the death even, against multi-culturalism, or anything not Islamic.

"It hath not been granted unto any prophet that he should possess captives; until he hath made a great slaughter of the infidels in the earth.
Make war on unbelievers until AllahÂ’s religion reigns supreme."
[selections from the Koran].

But I have a feeling this is just a first vawe designed to distract and misdirect attention. Hope I am wrong.

#10  O'Hare and Midway's terminals are a bitch to drop off and pick up at, but trying to time an explosion, get thru all those cars during peak times to get into the building I hope would be extremely difficult.

My mother spent a month in a burn ward some years back - and even that knowledge doesn't make me have sympathy for these guys. Make sure they can't do any more harm and then let them burn. Add more fuel if necessary.

That to me is the key bit. Terrorism only works when those it's aimed at are frightened into submission. When those it's aimed at fight back -- *and* they are in the majority -- the terrorists are well and truly screwed.

It's almost enough to make one sorry for the vicious idiots.

#6  The solution is to ban that theology, and to remove those out of that community that follow Islam. The West in the past has never had a large presence of Islam in its communities, due to the memories of the invasions by Muslims during the middle ages. And now that it has creeped back in, it has resumed its war.

Word, HSfC.

#2  This goes to show that today's enemy is not one with mighty armies, navies and air forces "over there" that can be seen and destroyed. It is the person next door whose thinking dictates they take a vehicle in the parking lot, fill it with explosives, and drive it to the corner market to kill as many non-military as possible. A thinking process shared by others via a dark and violent theology.

Via Islam, evil has cunningly made it past the military machine designed to protect the community, and destroys the most innocent of that community.

The solution is to ban that theology, and to remove those out of that community that follow Islam. The West in the past has never had a large presence of Islam in its communities, due to the memories of the invasions by Muslims during the middle ages. And now that it has creeped back in, it has resumed its war.
