Police Say Washington Baby Died After Mom Taped Pacifier in Infant's Mouth

LAKE STEVENS, Wash. — A woman was charged with manslaughter in the death of her 4-month-old son after she told authorities she taped a pacifier to his mouth to keep it from falling out.

Bonnie M. Desmond, 19, was charged Tuesday in the death of Noah James Petersen. Bail was set at $500,000. Desmond called 911 Monday and said her baby was unconscious, but paramedics found the boy had been dead for hours, Fire District 8 Deputy Chief David Lingenfelter said. Prosecutors wrote in reports that Desmond later indicated a pacifier had been taped to the child's mouth but she had removed it before calling authorities.
Which is a strong indication that she knew exactly how stupid dangerous a thing this was to do.
"The only thing I can think of is I taped the pacifier to keep it from falling out. I didn't know it would hurt him, or I wouldn't have done that," Desmond told police, according to the reports. No other children live in the home, which she shares with her fiance, and the fiance was not under investigation, said police Cmdr. Dan Lorentzen. The autopsy results were not immediately released. If convicted, Desmond faces 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 years in prison, Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor Mark Roe said.
Self-chlorinating gene pools. What'll they think of next?

#6  That's a similar problem to what we're dealing with, and stems from a common cause - young women having babies without growing up first, and most often without having a husband around to help out (and keep the sanity level above negative numbers). Eight of my daughter's friends and classmates have had children out of wedlock, most before they turned 18. That's ones we know about - the number may be higher. The statistics for Colorado Springs (pop. 400,000) state that there are 23 PROVEN cases of felony child abuse each year, and 18 of those involve teenage mothers. I hate to think what the statistics are for less-affluent cities.

#5  Wow, Zen you turned out pretty well for a kid who was tortured and ignored. However a little therapy would do you good.
Now, what does this ink spot suggest to you ?

(channeling Zenster) An E cup bra.

What ? ? ? ? oh, yeah I see it now.

#4  Come on, Zenster, admit it: you taped down the button.

All right, all right. I admit it! The double post was intentional. I wanted all sorts of folks to never again tape pacifiers into their babies' mouths like I had to endure. All my girlfriends have always wondered about my fixation. Now it's a matter of record. Are you happy for once?

#2  She probably taped the pacifier in to shut the baby up. Perhaps so she could get some sleep. Or take off to the bar for a few cold ones without anyone hearing him cry.

Either way, the baby had been dead for hours when she called it in. Asleep? Out of the house? It'll come out in the trial.
