#5  Thanks, guys.

JohnQC, the IED deaths are due to about 20% of all the IED's we come across. We detect the majority of them and suffer no losses.

Iraq is the cutting edge for terror right now. A lot of bright, imaginative people are working on producing better terror weapons including bombs. Those techniques and methods will eventually find their way to terrorists world-wide, but for right now we're bearing the losses from "building a better mouse trap".

Another thing to remember is that combat losses are by ones and twos. IED losses are usually several troops at a time. The nature of the weapon.

#4  IEDs are the weapon of choice of the terrorists. U.S. will have to put some good Yankee smarts to dealing with these damnable things.

#3  Combat deaths are down, even with the surge. But IED deaths are up in real numbers and percentage of losses. This illustrates the increased power and effectiveness of IEDs because of Iranian-supplied parts and Iranian/Iranian-trained personnel. Same story is being played out in Afghanistan. We are at war with Iran but won't/can't admit it. Dinnerjacket and the Mad Mullahs sense our weekness like sharks sense blood in the water and are going to continue to escalate until we give up and leave, abandoning our allied Afghans and Iraqis to their fate. Their fate doesn't look good to me - too many are more interested in accumulating personal wealth and power under American protection than in developing effective government (or military).
