| To follow up on yesterday's story, a reader writes to the "Relapsed Catholic": That LA times article about the old hippies complaining about the young'uns is even more hilarious than you know, because exactly the same article has appeared in the SF Chronicle over and over again as long as I can remember. I was a precocious newspaper reader at the age of 8 (so that would be 1983) and I have clear memories of reading exactly that article, and then reading it again the next year, and again and again, until I moved to the Haight in 1998 and started getting interviewed about the degeneracy myself. The Haight has been a sinkhole of depraved behavior *even for San Francisco* for my entire life, and for that entire time, newspapermen have been finding some old crusty flower children to interview about how runaways shooting up in restaurant bathrooms, bums defecating in doorways, aggressive panhandling and a homeless encampment that has come close to destroying the eastern end of Golden Gate Park have *nothing to do* with their civilization-eroding activities back in the day. |
