Fighting takes place between Puntland and Somaliland
2007-04-10
(SomaliNet) Troops from the semi-autonomous region of Puntland and the self breakaway republic of Somaliland engaged in armed confrontation in Dahar settlement of Sanaag region in north of Somalia, reports say on Monday. The cause of the latest clashes is not yet clear but sources say that the fighting sparked after Puntland parliament speaker paid a visit in the controversial state of Sanag.

The two regional governments have a long history of land dispute over two regions: Sool and Sanaag which each authority claims ownership. There is no immediate casualty on the fighting. Both sides are bringing additional troops to Dahar where the fighting began this time. Somaliland and Puntland are calmer for the moment than southern parts of Somalia.

#1  Somaliland has a competent military and a seasoned commander. I'm not sure about Puntland. Somaliland has also been getting some under-the-table assistance from the US Army Special Forces in Djibouti. Puntland may be making a huge mistake if they initiated hostilities.
