Jihadis stage brutal public murder at wedding in southern Thailand
2007-03-21
Gunmen shot and killed a Muslim couple selling toys just outside a wedding ceremony late Tuesday night, police said.

Vendor Edin Lade and his wife Rosamariya Bula were selling toys before a wedding ceremony in Cho Ai Rong district of Narathiwat. A group of gunmen walked up and fired directly into the heads of both of the toy sellers, before the eyes of hundreds of local residents attending the wedding. The couple died instantly, and the gunmen ran off as wedding guests scattered in fear and confusion. Police claimed to be hunting for the killers.

Meanwhile, insurgents ambushed an army patrol in the South early Wednesday, killing one and wounding two others, who were in critical condition. The attack took place at around 5 a.m. in Bacho district of Narathiwat.

Police said insurgents, heavily armed, opened fire on a unit of 10 patrolling soldiers who were following the separatists in the area of Duku village. Ambush sparked a 10-minute firefight, after which the body of the dead Thai officer was found.

The two injured soldiers were rushed to Bacho hospital before being transfered to Narathiwat Ratchanakarin hospital. Police believed that the shooters are members of the RKK separatist movement.

The shootout took place just a few hours prior to Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont's visit to Nong Chik district, Pattani province. Gen Surayud travelled South to listen to progress made in the investigation into an extremist ambush of a passenger van last week, when they murdered the eight passengers.

Selling toys is un-Islamic?
Why were these people killed?
