Syria not to be "isolated |
2007-03-11 |
Syria's minister of information Mohesn Bilal says the European Union's decision to end Syria's isolation is a just and historic decision. In an interview with Alalam news network, he said," Damascus is capable of breaking any international isolation, which some countries endeavored to impose on Syria". Implicitly referring to the French President Jacques Chirac, the minister underlined," Those who tried to cut off Syria's relations with the rest of the world have isolated themselves," however adding," Admitting one's mistake, even with delay, is acceptable and we welcome anyone visiting Syria". He said, "Syria was not regionally or internationally isolated even for a one single day." The minister cited visits by a number of European delegates as well as senior officials from Latin America and east Asia to Syria as the proof. Bilal also praised the Irish foreign minister's remarks, who, during the Brussels meeting, stated," Syria is a significant country with which we have to hold talks (with) and we can not turn our back on it". In a meeting held in Brussels yesterday, the EU member states voted for resumption of contacts with Syria. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana will be visiting Syria on Wednesday in a bid to resume talks with Damascus. |
