Australian envoy hopes to enforce N.Korea nuclear pledge |
2007-03-11 |
AUSTRALIAN diplomats were due to arrive in North Korea tonight on a mission to make it hold to its recent pledge to abandon its nuclear program and bolster trade ties. The delegation left Beijing today and was expected to arrive in Pyongyang later today, Sky News reported. At six-nation talks in Beijing in February, economically crippled and fuel-starved North Korea agreed to start disabling its nuclear facilities in exchange for badly needed energy aid. After the agreement, Prime Minister John Howard, whose Government is among the few to maintain diplomatic ties with Pyongyang, said he would send a delegation to ensure the regime kept its side of the bargain and which would aim to mend ties strained in recent years. |
