Budgie-smuggling has British press in a flap
2007-03-05
Look, let's be frank: Australia ain't called Down Under for nothing. Ours is the land of the impressive lunchbox. All politicians are required to pack a decent sandwich - and to show it off.

Last week, Malcolm Turnbull has his tackle on display at the parliamentary swimming pool in Canberra. During the Victorian election campaign, Ted Baillieu flew his up the flagpole at every available opportunity.

It's catching on in the US, too, where presidential candidate Barack Obama recently had the press swooning as he strode from the surf, all wet and smooth.

The British, by comparison, go to the beach wearing knotted hankies on their heads.

In other words, they are what they've always been: green with envy (and, after a day in the sun, red like a lobster, and about as well endowed.)

For his part, Debnam seemed pleased to have (again) been caught with his pants down. He immediately challenged Labor's man to a sand race in Speedos.
