#3 The reason that they reuse public domain sound effects so much is because most of them are copyrighted. One of the last TV shows where they could do DIY sound effects was the original Star Trek. From that point on, there were so many people making and copyrighting sound effects that you have to spend a fortune on them for TV and movie productions.
I knew a man whose band was hired to make just one of the sound effects for the movie Starship Troopers, the sound of a giant bug stomping. To do it, they had to buy the rights to an entire episode of a Japanese giant robot cartoon, just for the sound of the robot stomping, then modify it enough so it was unique.
Cost a fortune, for just one sound effect. The movie used I don't know how many. |
