(Xinhua) -- The United Sates said Thursday that any new Palestinian unity government must recognize Israel, renounce violence and accept past international agreements. "Israel needs a negotiating partner that acknowledges Israel's right to exist, renounces the use of violence against Israel and also abide by previous international agreements involving the Palestinians and Israel," White House spokesman Tony Snow said. "Those are the basic conditions and we certainly hope that Israel will find that partner we've worked with President Abbas and we continue to do what we can," Snow said. Snow made the comments after the Hamas-led Palestinian government resigned on Thursday and Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas asked the prime minister, Ismail Haniya, to form a new Palestinian unity government. The United States, a longtime supporter of Israel, has vowed not to deal with the Hamas-led Palestinian government until the radical Islamic group renounces violence and recognizes the existence of Israel. Moreover, the Bush administration has suspended direct aid and contacts with the Hamas-led Palestinian government.
